What is the best hd video camera available for production work?
February 26th, 2010 | by admin |i am in college and took a script writing class and thought of a really unique idea so me and a few friends are going to start filming and posting are episodes online. i realize that having a studio camera would be the best but i cant afford that. What would be the best available camera for around 1000 dollars or less? i would love an external mic and HD. Im new to video cameras so any advice would help. thanks.

Canon HV40 and a XLR Adapter (juicedLink or BeachTek).
And a tripod (Bogen Manfrotto).
And a shotgun mic (NRG Research SA-568, Sennheiser) and a couple of wireless lavs (Sennheiser, Shure, Audio Technica).
Lights – Guitar Center – a couple of light trees and 6-8 PAR 36 cans.
++++++++++++
Additional clarification:
The answer to your first question is "Red" (One or Scarlet) or Silicon Imaging. Your stated budget is puts you in the mid-high end consumer grade area. If your lighting is poor, expect poor results. You must maintain an evironment that is well within the camcorder’s capabilites. No low light, good audio levels.

Some suggestions…
1. Canon HV30 – HDV and DV are WAY less compressed than the highly compressed MPEG2 and AVCHD high definition cams you listed.
2. Canon HV30 – 24p – if you wait for the HV40, then you get 24p and 30p. Progressive frame capture is great for motion. Interlaced frames can leave artifacts.
3. Canon HV30 – it and the Sony HDR-HC9 are the least expensive camcorders with manual audio control. Check the manuals of the two you are looking at to confirm whether they have manual audio control.
4. Does not make sense. But all high definition camcorders in the $700 to $1,300 range essentially have the same sized lenses and imaging chips. If you require good low-light behavior, you need larger lenses and imaging chips found in prosumer and pro camcorders (Sony HDR-FX1, HDR-FX1000, Sony HDR-FX7, Canon XHA1).
5. Canon HV30 – Because the HV40 has been announced, you might be able to find deals on the HV30. MiniDV tape IS the archive and at about $3 per tape is the least expensive storage – a regular 60 minute miniDV tape will hold 63 minutes of HDV format video.
6.CanonHV40 sucessor to the HV series but usually worth over 1000 but try hard enough and you can find one under

I personally like the Cannon HG10 and HG20. It’s good for stuff like that. And it looks right around your price range. Heck, I’ve seen it do the same work of a much more expensive camera!
