What should I look for when buying a digital SLR camera?

March 18th, 2010 | by admin |

I am looking to buy a digital SLR camera. I had a minolta SLR film camera that died a few years ago and I still have all the parts. Would my quantaray lenses work with a new digital SLR camera? What about the attachable flash? What features should I look for in a new SLR camera?

If you want to use your old Minolta mount lenses and accessories you need a Sony Alpha DSLR. Sony bought Minolta and the Alpha has the same lens mount.

The features you look for depend on what type of photography interests you. Its also important to actually hold and check out the camera. Some will feel better in your hands and you will like the controls layout on one more than another. Get to the retailers and see which feel best to you. If you still cant decide you can post a new question giving your top choices and see how others would rate those choices.

Sony bought minolta, and so uses the same lens mount (with the caveat below):

Caveat: You may not be able to use your quantaray lens with the sony digital body – it depends on what minolta camera you had. If it was a later model (like a maxxum) then probably yes, if it was an older model (like the srt) then probably not.

The flash would probably only work in manual mode (not automatic mode), again it may depend. If it’s an older flash the voltage might be too high to use in a digital camera.

Do some research. If you already know about cameras, then you will be in a better position to decide for yourself what camera you want.
