It is a common …
It is a common misconception to believe people join Scientology because of the doctrine of Xenu. People actually come to Scientology hoping for increased intelligence, improved personality, and help in dealing with personal problems (as it advertises itself as a self-help philosophy). Later, if they had paid enough, they learn a system of beliefs based on science fiction stories, infestations of alien spirits and exploding volcanos.
This is the bait-and-switch aspect of the scheme.

@Themazz007
Though you may believe all religious organizations get away with the same things, I believe otherwise. There has been nothing more compelling than the stories of ex-Scientologists and how they were harassed by the Church of Scientology’s management. If other religious orgs are getting away with things, there aren’t any compelling stories out there detaliing what they have gotten away with.
In my opinion, Scientology’s the most corrupt organization in the world.

@OpenComments. Excellent points. I was speaking mainly with a sense of ironic flare. But I also meant “pyramid scheme” in terms of ideological methods & practices as opposed to finances. But yes, I agree, Scientology is predominantly centered around the obtainment of cash benefits moreso than any established “Old World” religion. However all religious organizations get away with the same things–The C of S just does so on a far grander scale.

@Themazz007
At the very least, religions are open and upfront about how their donations are distributed and reinvested back into the community. I consider a pyramid scheme to be one which benefits only a select few while milking the money out of many people.
With Scientology, donations are mandatory. They have always used tactics such as selling e-meters for an upwards of $27,000 when the device only costs $50 to make, and they have re-sold Scientology books slightly edited 4 times.

Indeed a good point. But really, aren’t all organized religions a pyramid scheme once you stop and think about it? Particularly Jehovah’s Witnesses. It doesn’t get much more Pyramid Scheme than that, eh?

I worked in a pharmacy and packed vitamins from bulk to retail size. I sold a LOT of them to people from The Church of Scientology around the corner. They then sold them to Scientologists with 1000% mark up as a CURE for their physical and mental problems!? BEWARE! Anyone who asks you to pay for a solution to your unhappy state or try to make you feel less about yourself is not acting in your best interest. Therefore RUN VERY FAST away from these soul leeches!

Go to a library, pick up a book by L. Ron Hubbard and read a sentence. With one sentence you would know more truth about Scientology than all this fabricated garbage embellished pipe dream and fairy dust magic crystal hippy bullshit we get from those guys without girlfriends sitting at home in three week old tighty whiteys and spaghetti stained wife beaters in their thirties living with their mom. I am honestly disgusted by the complete ignorance of these MFs. Seriously how dumb can you be?

The crossed-out crucifix was also used by Satanist and occult sex criminal Aleister Crowley.
You may remember him as being L Ron Hubbard’s friend and possible gay lover.
